•   The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, is a prominent Sikh gurdwara located in Amritsar, Punjab, India.

• It was built in the 16th century by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru.

• The temple is a symbol of Sikhism and its architecture reflects different architectural practices prevalent in the Indian subcontinent.

•   The temple has four entrances that symbolize the Sikh belief in equality and that all people are welcome into their holy place.
•   The temple has a square plan with a circumambulation path around the pool.     

• 
  The sanctum is a 12.25 x 12.25 metre square with two storeys and a gold leaf dome.

• This sanctum has a marble platform that is a 19.7 x 19.7 metre square. 

• The temple’s walls are covered with gold leaf and intricate designs.

•  The temple attracts devotees from different corners of the globe who seek blessings and spiritual solace.

• The Golden Temple remains an important focal point and symbol of Sikh culture. 

• Throughout the 18th century, Sikhs defied persecution by continuing to gather at the Golden Temple and continually restored it when external rulers desecrated it.

• In 1809, Maharaja Ranjit Singh had the temple sanctum covered with golden foil, giving it its name today
